Dice Discussions

Updated: Mar 3

Last term we shared some ‘goody bags’ with the schools our therapists work in. It was a small ‘thank you’ for working with us and for doing such great work in supporting children with SLCN.

We’ve had lots of lovely feedback, after all, who doesn’t love a goody bag!

One of the simple resources we shared were some discussion dice to support and build conversations. We know conversations can be a great way to practice communication generally and also to target specific aspects of language children are struggling with, though some children find conversations challenging.

As speech and language therapists, we often gamify our input – children learn best when they are engaged and having fun, so we give lots of language and communication practice through games and play. Using dice can be an easy way to support this and to scaffold language learning - and children of all ages find them fun.

We thought it might be nice to share the dice more widely, one is to support general conversation and the other to help with telling and retelling narratives. These are just a starting point and of course can be changed and adapted to suit different children.

We’ve also shared some extra ideas on how to use traditional dice to build games which practice simple language and communication.

We hope you find them useful. We’d also love to hear the games and activities you have found useful to support language and communication.
